Four Women Honored With Prestigious Awards

Karen Roberto, professor of human development and director of the Center for Gerontology and director of the Institute for Society, Culture, and Environment at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, was named the 2012 Gary Andrews Visiting Fellow by the Australian Association of Gerontology. As a result, Professor Roberto is giving five different presentations throughout Australia.
Dr. Roberto is a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Texas Tech University in Lubbock.
Elizabeth West Marvin, professor of music theory at the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester, received the Gail Boyd de Stwolinski Prize for Lifetime Achievement in Music Theory Teaching and Scholarship. The award is given every other year by the Gail Boyd de Stwolinski Center for Music Pedagogy at the University of Oklahoma.
Dr. Marvin is a past president of the Society for Music Theory. She holds master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Rochester.
Diana Lados, associate professor of mechanical engineering and director of the Integrative Materials Design Center at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts, received the Silver Medal of the Society from ASM International at the 2012 Materials Science and Technology Conference in Pittsburgh. The award is the highest honor given to mid-career professionals.
Dr. Lados has been on the faculty at WPI since 2006. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Polytechnic Institute of Bucharest, a second master’s degree from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and a Ph.D. in material science and engineering from WPI.
Terri Lucie Thompson, vice president for marketing and media at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, received the Higher Education Marketer of the Year Award from the American Marketing Association.
Thompson joined the staff at Purdue University in 2008. She is the former vice president of marketing for Safeco Insurance. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Illinois State University.
