Dean of the University of Nevada’s Cooperative Extension Is Leaving Post in October

Karen Hinton, the dean and director of the University of Nevada’s Cooperative Extension has announced that she will retire in October. Hinton is the longest-serving woman dean of an academic unit at the University of Nevada. She has served as director of Cooperative Extension since 1998. All told, she has been employed by the university for 31 years.

Under her leadership, the extension service has expanded from mainly agricultural assistance programs to a wide variety of educational programs for preschoolers to senior citizens. Cooperative Extensive has offices in all 18 Nevada counties.

Hinton is a native of Happy, Texas, where she lived on a 1,200-acre farm. She earned a bachelor’s degree in home economics at Texas Tech University and a master’s degree in the same subject from the University of Nevada.
