Gender Differences in School Safety Indicators

The National Center for Educational Statistics and the Bureau of Justice Statistics recently released the report, Indicators of School Crime and Safety: 2011.

Here is some of the gender-specific data from the report that may be of interest:

• Percentage of female high school students who reported that drugs were available at their school in 2009: 19.3%

• Percentage of male high school students who reported that drugs were available at their school in 2009: 25.9%

 

• Percentage of female students ages 12 to 18 who reported being bullied at school in 2009: 29.5%

• Percentage of male students ages 12 to 18 who reported being bullied at school in 2009: 26.6%

 

• Percentage of female high school students who said they had been involved in a physical fight at school in 2009: 6.7%

• Percentage of male high school students who said they had been involved in a physical fight at school in 2009: 15.1%

 

• Percentage of female high school students who said they had carried a weapon at school in 2009: 2.9%

• Percentage of male high school students who said they had carried a weapon at school in 2009: 8.0%

 

• Percentage of female high school students who said they had consumed alcohol on school property in 2009: 3.6%

• Percentage of male high school students who said they had consumed alcohol on school property in 2009: 5.3%

 

• Percentage of female high school students who said they had used marijuana on school property in 2009: 2.8%

• Percentage of male high school students who said they had used marijuana on school property in 2009: 6.3%
