Notable Appointments of Women in Higher Education

● Barbara Entwisle, Kenan Distinguished Professor of Sociology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, was appointed vice chancellor for research at the university.
A graduate of Swarthmore College, Dr. Entwisle holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in sociology from Brown University.
● Jamie Monson, professor of history at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, was granted tenure.
Dr. Monson, who joined the college’s faculty in 2009, is a graduate of Stanford University. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles.
● Kathryn Maguet was named executive director of the Weis Center for the Performing Arts at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. She was center series director at the University of Massachusetts Fine Arts Center.
Maguet holds bachelor’s degrees from Illinois State University and Millikin University and a master’s degree from American University.
● Heidi Lasley Barajas was appointed executive director of Urban Research and Outreach-Engagement Center at the University of Minnesota. She has been serving as associate dean for engagement and faculty development at the university’s College of Education and Human Development.
Dr. Barajas holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Utah. She earned a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Minnesota.
● Christine Valle was named director of the Women in Engineering program at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. Valle has taught engineering at Georgia Tech since 2004.
Professor Valle holds master’s and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering from Georgia Tech. She earned a second master’s degree in aerospace engineering from Grand Ecole EPF in France.
● Pamela J. Baker, Helen A. Papaioanou Professor of Biological Sciences at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, was appointed vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty. Dr. Baker has taught at Bates since 1989.
A 1970 graduate of Bates College, Dr. Baker earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
